Claude Seanla hit a second half hat-trick as Winslow United blew away local rivals Buckingham Athletic in a resounding 4-0 victory at the weekend.
In front of a 300-strong crowd, the two sides were evenly-matched in a goalless first half, but the home side stormed to victory with a dominant second half display that saw Seanla grab a hat-trick and Vinny Shrieves net once. The result keeps Winslow in the top half of SSML Division One while Athletic remain 12th.
United gave a debut to goalkeeper Jack Sillitoe as they named a strong starting line-up against an Athletic side missing key players through injury.
The opening exchanges were feisty with Paul Dearlove fortunate to go unpunished after a two-footed lunge as the two sides battled to get a foothold in the game.
There were chances at either end as a good strike from Phil Martin forced Sillitoe into a smart save before Dave O’Dell also went close, while at the other end Jack Butler made a fine stop after good work from Drew Mitten and Seanla.
Goalless at the break, Winslow made the crucial breakthrough shortly after half time when Ryan Freshwater’s pinpoint 35-yard pass found Rob McDonald, who beat two men before an inch-perfect cross found Seanla to head home and send the home crowd wild.
Perry Mercer’s side then doubled their lead just moments later as another fine cross, this time from Freshwater, saw Seanla head in a second and put United in command.
Seanla almost had a hat-trick of headers as a rampant Winslow threatened more goals with Hateley Mercer hitting the post before MItten struck the bar.
Athletic substitute Jonny Cater almost got his side back into the game, but the hosts wrapped up the three points thanks to Shrieves, who raced past the visiting defence and slotted home.
Athletic also hit the bar before Seanla scored his first hat-trick for the club with a calm finish late on, rounding off an emphatic victory.
Both sides are back in action this weekend with Winslow away at Codicote and Athletic hosting Arlesey Reserves.
