After an impressive performance for the Sahara Force India team during the Young Driver Test, James Calado has been named as the team’s official third driver ahead of this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
Currently racing in the GP2 Series, Calado will drive the Force India during the opening free practice session at Monza today, Friday, on the opening day of the three-day Italian Grand Prix event.
The youngster is currently placed fifth in the GP2 standings, and he will race in two GP2 events at Monza alongside his new F1 duties.
He said: “I am really pleased to have been able to conclude this deal with Sahara Force India. I felt I performed well at Silverstone in the Young Driver Test and obviously the team were pleased as well.
“I want to do a good job for the team and the chance to drive a Grand Prix car at Monza is very exciting indeed.
“After Silverstone, Monza is probably the most historic Grand Prix track in the world and I can’t wait to drive out of the pit lane on Friday!”
Vijay Mallya, the boss of the Force India team, added: “This is a great opportunity for James to gain valuable experience driving during F1 race meetings. I am very confident he will perform well.”
Calado will carry out his third driver role at all of this year’s remaining Grands Prix.
