Blue Fins storm to win in Nottingham

Bicester Blue Fins won the second round of the National Arena League West Midlands Division Two, which was held in Nottingham.

Competing against Witney & District, Arnold, Belper Marlin, City of Coventry B and Tewkesbury, Bicester didn’t have long to wait for their first top three finish when the U11 girls freestyle team of Tabitha Watkins, Lottie Wynne-Jones, Maddy Powell and Melissa White finished second behind a fast Witney team.

The U11 boys team of Freddie Ashley-Sparks, Matty Thornley, Alex Pryce and Lucas Davies were third, while Chloe Wanless, Tabitha Watkins, Eloise Tagg and Zoe Pollock helped the U13 girls medley team to second, which was matched by the boys.

Bicester’s first win of the night came in the U15 girls freestyle relay when captain Georgia Tagg led Joelly Alexander, Olivia Ashley-Sparks and Ellie Faulkner to victory, with Tom Thornley, Kieran Bird, Callum Laird and Oliver Inness finishing third for the boys. The open ladies team secured another win, putting Bicester two points clear after the first 10 events.

In the individual races, there were victories for Lottie Wynne-Jones (U11 50m backstroke), William Whitley (U13 100m breaststroke), Georgia Tagg (U15 100m backstroke and open 100m backstroke), Tom Thornley (U15 100m backstroke), Elli Bunce (100m butterfly), Freddie Ashley-Sparkes (U11 50m butterfly), Oliver Inness (U13 100m backstroke) and Kieran Bird (U15 100m butterfly).

Bicester picked up several further victories, with Ethan Miranda-Gale, Daniel Pilgrim and Cerys King all doing well, as the Blues Fins took a total of 17 wins in the 50 races with 12 second places finishes and eight third places.
