Buckingham LHC 1st XV were knocked out of the Investec National Cup at the semi-final stage after a 2-0 loss to Premier Division side Bowdon Hightown.
Having won the Conference West title, Buckingham went into the game confident but made the worst possible start when a defensive error allowed Olympic bronze medalist Sally Walton to swing towards goal and her miss-hit shot looped over goalkeeper Anna Searle into the net.
Stunned from conceding so early, Buckingham gradually played their way back into the game and created a number of opportunities with San Sandham coming closest as her fine run and shot forced a good save from the visiting goalkeeper as Bowdon remained 1-0 up at half time.
Buckingham began the second half well and almost levelled through Zoe Shipperley before Sandham’s shot was somehow scrambled off the line.
The home side continued to enjoy more possession but they failed to break down the visitors and in the final few minutes Bowdon scored the crucial second goal that put them through to the final.
This weekend, Buckingham go to Reading Hockey Club to take on Beeston and Olton in the race for promotion to the Premier Division.
