Buckingham Ladies 1st XI continued their immaculate season with a 13th straight win in the league before progressing into the semi-finals of the Investec National cup.
Buckingham now need just one point from their remaining five games to retain the Investec Women’s Conference West title after beating Barnes Hounslow Ealing 4-0.
The home side started well but – despite having 12 penalty corners in a totally dominant first half – they failed to find the breakthrough due to a combination of inspired goalkeeping and bad luck.
However, Buckingham’s fortunes turned around three minutes into the second half when they were awarded another penalty corner and this time they made no mistake with Zoe Shipperley unleashing an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner.
Despite continuing to dominate, Buckingham had to wait until the closing stages to extend their lead when a mazy dribble from Jo Ellis resulted in a tap in for Lorraine Campbell.
Shipperley made it 3-0 minutes later with another penalty corner strike before Vikki Ross completed the scoring – popping in a rebound from close range.
Buckingham are also into the semi-finals of the cup following a 4-1 victory over Wimbledon in the quarters.
Again Buckingham began positively but they were up against another fine goalkeeper display to keep the match goalless before Wimbledon took a shock lead against the run of play.
The response from Buckingham was swift, though, and they levelled immediately through Aly Billington.
The turnaround was completed moments later as Ellis deflected the ball home to give Buckingham a half time lead before Wimbledon’s resistance was finally broken in the second half with goals from Ellis and Charlie Bracken.
Buckingham will face a home semi-final against Bowdon Hightown, who are fifth in the Premier League on Sunday, March 24.
