With Bicester’s first team not in action at the weekend, the focus turned to the IIs but they were overpowered by a strong Witney side 26-0 in BBO Division Two.
Despite the scoreline, Bicester compete admirably in the set-piece scrums and line-outs against an impressive Witney pack, and they also enjoyed an equal share of the territory and possession, but the home side’s clinical finishing proved the difference.
Bicester dominated the opening first quarter with forwards Ali Atashgah and Jamie Stevens and backs Simon Poole and Dickie Walsh all impressing, but it was Witney who took the lead through a 20th-minute Luke Manning try after he evaded some lacklustre Bicester tackling.
Manning dotted down for his second try minutes later, with Leigh Manning converting to put Witney 12-0 ahead at the interval.
Again Bicester controlled the early stages of the second half but failed to find the breakthrough, which was in complete contrast to the hosts who breached the Bicester defence twice more. First Ben Macpherson touched down before Manning completed his hat-trick and a commanding Witney victory.
Bicester’s first team are back on the field this weekend to take on Phoenix away in the BBO Premier, while the IIs host Windsor IIIs and the IIIs visit Aylesbury.
