Kitty Higgins’ 43rd minute goal was enough to give Investec Conference West league leaders Buckingham a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Exe.
Buckingham began at a high tempo and attempted to utilise their possession in the Exe final quarter but the home defence remained firm and refused to buckle under the heavy Buckingham pressure.
The visitors went close when Player of the Match, Jessica Bloom, hit the post in a near-perfect reverse deflection penalty corner routine, but the teams remained level at the break.
The second half saw a continuation of Buckingham pushing forward and trying to breakdown the home side’s defence and eventually the well-earned goal arrived when, on 43 minutes, Kitty Higgins deftly touched home a penalty corner.
Exe stayed resolute and kept going to keep it at 1-0 but that was enough to give Buckingham a fifth victory from five.
This weekend, Buckingham face a top-of-the-table clash with Slough, who are three points behind in second. The match will be played at Stowe School.
