Bicester Boxing Club’s Anthony Miller convincingly beat Shawn Roberts at the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre to record his first win fighting for the local club.
Miller, who was making his second appearance for Bicester having lost on his debut, was up against home favourite Roberts in a welterweight contest.
With a slight height advantage, Miller showed positive intent in the opening round as he worked neatly behind his jap, keeping Roberts at bay. His powerful right cross also caused problems before he seemed to hurt Roberts with a strong punch seconds from the end of the first round.
The second round was similar to the first, although Miller started to show more aggression and landed some good hooks to the body, and cut Roberts with a precise right uppercut.
Miller continued his dominance in the third round against an increasingly desperate Roberts, whose sloppy boxing was allowing Miller to pick him off with neat combinations, giving him a well-earned 30-27 victory.
After the contest, Miller said: “I knew this was a going to be a tough contest but I was keen to pick up a victory here after missing out on my debut. I will be straight back to the gym now to build on tonight’s performance.”
Bicester Boxing Club’s head coach, Daza Usher, added: “Anthony has been training really well in the lead up to this bout. He is always a regular in the gym and the hard work he has put in over the last several months has paid off tonight. I think he can push on from this victory and look to box again on our home show at the end of the year.”
