Bicester Boxing Club’s exciting welterweight, Anthony Miller, came away with an impressive and well-deserved victory when he came up against the more experienced Arron Mullis of Witney at the MECA Theatre in Swindon.
Miller was given only four days notice for this contest but still jumped at the chance to showcase his skills in front of a packed arena.
The first round was awarded to Miller as he established a solid jab and kept his opponent guessing with neat combinations and intelligent head movement. The superior hand speed and accurate punches were all being landed by Miller and as the bell sounded to signal the end of the first round, Miller came back to his corner with an air of confidence.
The second round was a closer affair. Mullis boxed on the back foot and started to land his jab more regularly, while Miller took the centre of the ring and used angles to confuse his opponent as both boxers traded hard punches towards the end of the round.
The third and final round saw Miller start the stronger of the two and he applied more pressure on the tiring Mullis. A sharp right uppercut snapped Mullis’ head back and made him give ground to the swarming Miller. The crowd were on their feet as both boxers looked to land the knockout blow, before the bell signaled and the two men embraced after a hard-fought contest, which saw Miller take a unanimous victory on all three scorecards.
After the contest, Miller said: “I took this match at short notice but I am always ready to box and I’m always willing to travel to the away shows. I train hard and keep myself in shape all year round.”
Bicester head coach, Daza Usher, added: “This was a good solid performance. He had everything going against him but we always train hard in the gym. I’m really pleased with the way he executed the game plan and will go into his next contest full of confidence.” Miller’s next fight will be at Cheltenham racecourse at the end of March.”
