Buckingham LHC first team are through to the quarter-finals of the National Cup after a 2-0 victory over South League leaders Maidenhead on Sunday.
The home side contained a number of experienced former internationals, but Buckingham began well and took a crucial early lead when Katrina Nicholson scored from close range following fine play from Alex Naughalty and Sam Sandham.
The visitors wasted further chances while Maidenhead’s Jane Smith thundered an effort against the crossbar in one of the hosts’ few attacks.
The second half continued in much the same vein with the match turning scrappy as both sides missed opportunities to score before the visitors finally killed the game off in the final minutes when some incisive passing down the right between Zoe Shipperley, Tracy Jones and Sandham saw Nicholson smash the ball home.
Buckingham will play at home to Premier League side Sutton Coldfield in the quarter-finals, which take place in February.
