Buckingham Ladies Hockey Club’s 1st XI have gone top of the Investec Conference West table after earning a hard-fought win over Trojans.
The encounter was another tough battle with Buckingham starting the brighter of the two teams. The home side created a number of opportunities in the opening period and were rewarded after just five minutes when some good work from Jo Ellis allowed Sam Sandham to volley home.
Despite controlling the majority of possession, Buckingham struggled to add to their lead, wasting several good chances, until shortly before half time when Sandham slotted a penalty corner rebound into the net.
The second half was a more scrappy affair as Buckingham began to make some sloppy mistakes and gifted Trojans a penalty stroke and the visitors made no mistake to leave the match in the balance.
A midfield battle then ensued for the next 20 minutes before Buckingham finally took control and made sure of the points through Jo Ellis, who scrambled the ball home to secure a 3-1 win.
This weekend, Buckingham face a double header at local rivals Oxford Hawks. They play in the league on Saturday and then the cup on Sunday.
