Towcester’s first team had a far from easy return to action following the Christmas Break as they went down to a 7-2 defeat at Division One leaders Lichfield at the weekend.
In an entertaining, end-to-end encounter, Lichfield opened the scoring from their first penalty corner, and then scored a second goal from open play, but Towcester had chances of their own before deservedly pulling one back when Laura Whittle skilfully slotted the ball through the home goalkeeper’s legs to keep Tows in the game at 2-1 down when half-time arrived.
Although the home side’s play failed to reflect their lofty league position, they did managed to strike twice more as their clinical finishing proved to be the difference between the sides with Tows also enjoying plenty of possession but failing to do much with it.
Towcester’s pressure did finally pay off, though, when a free-flowing move ended with Emily Kelly crossing for Christina Piccianti who brought the visitors to within two.
But Lichfield were not done there and they scored three further times to seal victory. Player of the Match was awarded to katherine Pittam.
Towcester, who are down to sixth in Midlands Division One, visit fifth-placed Loughborough this weekend.
