MOTORsport: Advertiser & Review region Formula Ford racers have much to look forward to in 2011, with the calendars of numerous racing series scheduled to be released during the next few weeks, writes James Beckett.
The world’s most popular junior single-seater category will again feature on Silverstone’s racing calendar, with the Walter Hayes Trophy scheduled for next November while numerous outings for the cars at club meetings during the season will also be on offer.
It is hoped that FF1600 may return to the full Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit with a race for all ages of car, with an announcement expected from a race promoter shortly.
Away from Silverstone, Formula Ford cars will be on track at the majority of Britain’s leading venues including Brands Hatch and Mallory Park.
The Champion of Brands, which featured Gawcott’s Dan Fox and his Buckingham-based Team Fox Racing team-mate, Kevan McLurg, during the 2010 season will return next season for a four-round series at Brands Hatch - the spiritual home of the category. Chackmore-based Sheshon Racing plan to enter a Mondiale M88S in selected Champion of Brands races for James Wood, a driver who drove for the team in an East Claydon School project car at Silverstone last month during the Walter Hayes Trophy. Brands Hatch will also play host to the 40th Formula Ford Festival in October.
Another highlight that will allow the region’s best Formula Fordsters to prove their worth will be the new ‘Race of the Year’ at Mallory Park.
The exact date is still to be finalised, but the race is expected to take place in August and will form part of a new historic event at the Leicestershire lakeside venue.
>>Silverstone-based Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC), Britain’s leading organiser of historic motor racing events, has announced its provisional 2011 race calendar write Colin and James Beckett.
The HSCC season will run from March to November and will see its championships visit all of Britain’s leading race circuits.
The new season will start on March 20th at Donington Park, and season highlights will include the Silverstone International Trophy weekend in May, the Brands Hatch Historic Superprix in July, Silverstone Classic , also in July, and the Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone in November.
The HSCC run championships and series for all types of historic cars, from small capacity single seaters through to F5000 cars of the 1970s.
New for 2011 will be the E-Type Challenge, a series that will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary Coventry-manufactured sportscar. The E-Type Challenge will race at Brands Hatch, Silverstone, the German Nurburgring, Oulton Park and at the superb Goodwood Revival in September.
The HSCC will formally launch their new season at the Autosport International Show at Birmingham’s NEC on January 13-16.
