Nico Rosberg will start tomorrow’s Silverstone Grand Prix on pole after an extraordinary qualifying session this afternoon.
Lewis Hamilton appeared destined to take pole as he led going into the dying seconds of the session, but his decision to head into the pits on his final lap proved costly as the track dried sufficiently for Rosberg to pip him with Sebastian Vettel second and Jenson Button third.
Hamilton will start a disappointing sixth in another blow to his title hopes.
Silverstone’s Force India and Bicester’s Toro Rosso both saw their drives into the top ten with Nico Hulknberg starting fourth, Sergio Perez seventh, Daniil Kvyat ninth and Jean-Éric Vergne 10th.
Earlier in the session, both Ferrari drivers – Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen – were shock exits in Q1 alongside the two Williams drivers.
