FOOTBALL: Brackley Town’s eight-game unbeaten league run ended abruptly at The Eyrie on Saturday as a bold Bedford Town side brushed them aside 5-2.
There could be no complaints as chances were squandered at one end and cheap goals conceded at the other.
How different the afternoon might have been had Jefferson Louis found the target in the second minute when well placed.
Instead Bedford were gifted an opening goal on 20 minutes when Turley (pictured) misjudged a long ball leaving James Hatch to head into an unguarded goal, the Bedford wide-man scoring on his first start since returning to his former club. Within two minutes Bedford had doubled the lead as Drew Roberts finished with a striker’s instinct at close range from Hatch’s header.
Slowly the visitors began to assert themselves and just after the half hour Darby felled Solkhon conceding a penalty. Louis stepped up but saw his kick saved by Brown. On 39 minutes Sandy created space for a shot that flew over before Tom Winters’ control at speed conjured an excellent goal low to Brown’s right to put Saints back in the game. As the break approached Sandy’s fine run found an opening but the shot was high in a let off for Bedford.
The second half started with Brackley on the attack but it was the home side through the excellent Roberts who grabbed the vital strike in a goalmouth scramble of Saints’ own making before Roberts notched his hat-trick beating Turley at his near post from a tight angle.
Worse was to follow on 72 minutes as Jermaine Hall latched onto a long ball to lob the keeper for a fifth goal to cap a disastrous collapse from which there was no way back.
Substitute Diggin reduced the deficit following good work by Clifton. Story’s shot was saved when well placed and Winters struck the bar as the clock ran down on a dismal afternoon for Brackley that saw the Blues record only their second home win of the season.
