Brackley Town 5
Cogenhoe United 2
Brackley reached the final of the Hillier Senior Cup beating UCL Premier League side Cogenhoe at a cold St James Park on Tuesday.
Twice going ahead through the pacy Alfie Taylor Cogenhoe held out as Brackley piled up the chances, eventually overwhelming their opponents as the second half wore on.
Both sides lost key players to injury early in the first half, Palmer for Brackley and Hewitt both limping off before Tom Winters found the net only for an offside flag to rule out his effort on 29 minutes.
Against the run of play Cogenhoe took the lead as Taylor, accorded too much space and time, found a fine finish on 34 minutes. On the half time whistle Brackley grabbed the equalising goal courtesy of Francis Green’s header from Winters’ cross.
After the break Saints penned Cogenhoe back but it was the visitors who again took the lead on 49 minutes, Taylor scoring direct from a free-kick that was poorly defended.
On the hour Winters’ fierce shot brought the scores level once more after a spell of intense pressure on the Cogenhoe goal. Northants U18 keeper O’Connor performed well for the visitors making several excellent stops but with 15 minutes to play centre-back Tom Kemp headed home Winters’ corner and on 83 minutes Owen Story collected a misplaced pass and finished well to extend the lead before Winters bagged a second with two minutes remaining after a fine run and cross-shot.
The 5-2 scoreline did not flatter the hosts who created countless chances but Cogenhoe departed with heads high after a thoroughly entertaining game.
