FOOTBALL: Brackley Sports are celebrating becoming North Bucks & District League Premier Division champions.
They overcame local rivals Grendon Rangers 3-1 on the last day of the season to take the title on goal difference from Hale Leys United.
Sports led 1-0 in the eighth minute when Nigel Jenkins played a fine ball over the top of the defence for topscorer Gavin Hansell to sprint clear and shoot into the bottom corner.
They increased their lead to 2-0 after the break when Jenkins saw the Grendon keeper off his line expecting a cross and fired home into the top corner.
Grendon hit back to make it 2-1 on 78 minutes when Sports keeper Matt Georgou was penalised for holding the ball for too long and the free kick found its way into the bottom corner to set up a tense finish.
Sports sealed victory four minutes later when Jenkins raced clear of the defence and forced a save from the keeper, only for Hansell to follow up and net from close range.
There were also good performances from Sports’ back four of Graham Beckett, Mark Mounsdon, Darren Sharpe and Steve Pratt, with Jenkins, Dan Devalle and Will Grasshoff dominating in midfield.
Sports manager Andy Prescott said afterwards: “What a fantastic way to end the season - winning the league on the last day. It’s a massive achievement for the club, the players and myself.”
