Story strike brings joy for Brackley

FOOTBALL: In-form Backley Town are looking back on a week of success which saw them capture the Northants Senior Cup 1-0 against Corby S&L on Tuesday following a 3-0 league win at Bashley last Saturday.

In the Senior Cup final played at Northampton FC, the game’s only goal from Owen Story separated the sides leaving Brackley to record their first senior cup win.

In a busy first half Brackley created chances to open the scoring, the main threat coming from wide men Story and Tom Winters.

Corby had no answer to Winters’ powerful running on the left as on 29 minutes when he beat three defenders and crossed superbly for Story to shoot just wide. Minutes before Paul Dempsey climbed in the penalty area to head against the crossbar in the closest that either side came to a goal before the interval.

The departure of Winters through injury at the break denied Brackley an attacking option out wide and the second half was a scrappy affair. It took Story’s goal on 70 minutes to light up the evening with a move of quality worthy of a cup final.

Francis Green was cleverly released on the right, skipping away from his marker, and his low cross from the by-line was swept home by a joyous Story arriving through the middle late.

Brave Stewart and Lloyds fought gamely and threatened briefly late on but in truth this was a comfortable night for Brackley. Captain Chris Willmott lifted the silver trophy to ignite excited scenes among Saints’ supporters, who had turned out in force to support their team.

Brackley Town: Bond, Clifton, Gould (J. Green 80), Quinn, Wilmott, Kemp, Story, Palmer, F.Green, Dempsey, Winters (Magunda 45).

Last Saturday, Saints’ good run continued with a 3-0 win in the Zamaretto Premier Division at Bashley, Elliott Sandy netting goals in both halves and Barry Quinn sealing victory in the 82nd minute.

Brackley return to league action this Saturday at home to Swindon Supermarine, kick-off 3pm.
