Buckingham Swans 48

Eccleshall Ladies 3

Buckingham Swans beat Eccleshall comfortably on Sunday and achieved promotion to Championship North 1, just one league away from the Premiership.

The scoring soon got underway with a tap and go penalty followed by excellent handling allowing Buckingham’s Emma Bown to touch down under the posts. Kelly Wallis added the conversion taking Swans into a 7-0 lead.

Shortly afterwards, Swans domination in the scrum released the backs again to allow Jo Godfrey to dart to the line. Wallis converted. Swans were quick off the restart with some good recycling and off loading for Godfrey to score her second.

Eccleshall continued to fight hard against the Buckingham pack but a turnover in Buckingham’s favour only provided more possession to convert into points with a fourth try for Swans and first of the game for Becky Pearson giving the home side a 24-0 lead going into the break.

Swans’ persistence continued in the second half as they piled on the pressure at the breakdown for captain Sophie Lepper to score in the corner. Swans worked hard to scoop up the loose ball at the line out to once again release their backs seeing Pearson score her second try. Wallis added the conversion.

Pressure at the scrum allowed several changeovers of possession but Swans continued with their strong counter rucking and were able to provide the centers with possession for Emma Bown to plough through and score her second of the game. Wallis converted. Buckingham were unlucky to have a player sent to the bin for a mistimed hand off catching the Eccleshall player in the face leaving the ref no option but to show a yellow. Eccleshall took their chance to put some points on the board by kicking a penalty.

Buckingham ultimately had the last word and the last score with Pearson notching her hat-trick.

The missed conversion left the game ending at 48-3. Women of the match were Sophia Maynell and Becky Pearson. Buckingham finish their season next Sunday playing hosts to Moseley, kick-off 2.30pm.
