HOCKEY: Following on from the success of their inaugural festival in 2012, Bicester Hockey Club held their 2nd Fox Festival last Sunday.
With fingers crossed all week for no rain the day was sunny and rather chilly, making a good day for hockey.
With teams from Stratford, Abingdon, Outlanders and the Bicester Young Farmers returning for the festival plus two new teams, Top Bananas and Redbridge and Ilford, joining the event the hockey was shaping up to be competitive. Bicester fielded a number of teams and realising the strength of the club a significant number of juniors were involved.
The Chairman’s Champs found themselves in the final having knocked out The Badgers in a closely contested sudden death penalty shoot out and were up against Youth in Revolt for the trophy. Great team play by Youth in Revolt gave added pressure to the Chairman’s Champs defence and when a terrific shot from the Youth’s front line deflected by the Champs keeper landed kindly their quick witted thinking enabled them to convert the loose ball to take the lead.
The Champs rallied and pressured the Youth’s defensive line, their hard work paid off with a flick given in their favour, which was then saved by the Youth’s keeper. The final result, 1-0, gave Youth in Revolt the Fox Festival Trophy for 2012.
Many thanks to all teams, many of who travelled from afar, who took part in the festival and to everyone who contributed to make the day a great success. Looking forward to 2013, there will be hopefully more competitive hockey and challenges for the coveted trophy.
