UNHAPPY users of Towcester Centre for Leisure say they are mounting a boycott in protest against conditions at the centre.
South Northants Council, which owns the centre, has defended its cleaning regime in a statement this week but promised an investigation of the complaints.
Towcester resident Colin Bretherton has written to the council, over a recent visit where he c
laims floors had not been cleaned and silverfish insects were found in one of the changing rooms.
He said there was also rubbish on the floor and a notice on the fridge in the kitchen area asking people to not use food which was excessively out-of-date.
Mr Bretherton had a meeting with the centre manager around 18 months ago following a previous complaint where he was told a new cleaning regime would be set up, new machinery installed and the ceiling, which had caused many of the problems in the changing rooms, replaced.
He said: "For a very brief period of time conditions did improve but then they slid back.
"Since then, I and a number of other residents of Towcester have been boycotting Towcester Centre for Leisure."
He added he returned to the centre after the new ceiling had been installed, but the conditions there were worse than before.
Another user of the centre, David Williams, claims the changing rooms are a 'disgrace' while Wendy Cater describes them as 'appalling.'
In a statement, South Northants Council, said: "South Northamptonshire Council's Leisure Service Team carries out monthly site visits and inspections at the district's public leisure centres to ensure that they are maintained to a high standard for the community.
"We will investigate these issues and act accordingly as we continue to work closely with The South Northants Leisure Trust to provide a quality sports and leisure service to local people."
Brian Taylor, chairman of the South Northants Leisure Trust said: "Serco Leisure manage Towcester Centre for Leisure on behalf of the South Northants Leisure Trust.
"The centre has recently received major re-investment targeting the non-sporting areas.
"Feedback from the customers has been very positive and recent inspections by the client Quest (UK Quality scheme for sport and leisure) and health and safety has resulted in positive feedback.
"I am therefore somewhat surprised at some of these comments as the feedback we have been receiving is very positive.
"As a responsible employer, we will however, undertake a formal investigation and address any issues found."
