THE world of literature and fiction was an open page for children across the Advertiser & Review region as local schools celebrated World Book Day.

Children dressed up as a variety of different characters to mark the event last week, and authors also visited to talk about their books and entertain the pupils.

Greens Norton Primary School welcomed author and poet Andrew Fusek Peters. He chatted with the children about story-writing skills and his work.

Class teacher and literacy co-ordinator, Verity Stobart, said: "He did a workshop session where he performed some of his poems and talked about the creative writing process and where he gets his ideas from."

Thornborough Infant School was visited by author and illustrator, Sally Hunter, while children at the school dressed as their favourite book characters, including Mog the Forgetful Cat, Harry Potter, a skeleton from the book Funny Bones and the Very Hungry Caterpillar. Parents also visited the school throughout the week to read to the children.

Buckingham Primary School held a Jungle Book Party where pupils dressed as characters from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, including Baloo the bear and Shere Khan the tiger.

Pupils at North Marston School celebrated book week with each class at the school focusing on a story from another culture. On Friday, pupils dressed as characters from their favourite books.

Finmere Primary School marked the event with children going dressed as book characters, and other pupils performing The Gingerbread Man. The event at Finmere followed a visit from children's author Adam Guillain last month, who ran a writing workshop at the school.
