Mark Stopps, vice chairman of the organising committee said: "It went really well, turn-out was well up on last year.

"We are still calculating because the pre-sold wrist bands are still being collected but there was at least 5,500 visitors."

The carnival began with Brackley Mayor, Kevin Dixon and the carnival King and Queen, Laurens Taling and Emily Burr leading a procession 30 floats and walking displays from the Brackley Sawmill, down Northampton Road to the St John's site at Magdalen College School.

A competition for the best float saw the Greyhound Pub scoop first prize, with 5th Brackley Guides and Brownies coming second and the Brackley Players and Little Oaks Pre-School each being awarded a joint third place.

Big crowds gathered to watch the main entertainment at the school which included a motorcyclist speeding around the inside of a metal cage in the Globe of Death and a display of lumberjack skills by Adam's Axemen.

Organising committee chairman, Richard Davison said the day is an event for local people and revealed that next year's carnival will take place on Saturday, June 13.

He said: "It is a community carnival, so really what we wanted to reflect is every aspect of the community in and around Brackley.
"So what we would like is as many local clubs and societies as possible to get in touch with us for next year."

Mr Davison also appealed for pictures and feedback on the carnival and for anyone interesting in helping to run the event to contact the committee via their website at www.brackley-carnival.co.uk.
