DOZENS of retailers and groups came together to celebrate Buckingham's first anniversary as a Fairtrade Town on Saturday (20/09).
Organised by the Buckingham Fairtrade Steering Group, the celebration outside the Old Gaol featured a market selling all manner of goods as well as dance displays and a demonstration of African-style drumming by children from Buckingham Primary School.

Teas, coffees, cocoa, fruit juice, fresh and dried fruit, chocolate, biscuits, oils, sugar and honey were among the goods on sale.

Cllr Ruth Newell, a member of Buckingham Town Council and the Buckingham Fairtrade Steering Group, said: "We were really pleased to celebrate the first anniversary of Buckingham gaining Fairtrade status, and we hope that more businesses, schools and cafes will sign up to the good cause."

Local retailers taking part included Oxfam, Back to Nature, Waitrose, Tesco, Wine Rack and The Ethical Food Company.

Caterers serving Fairtrade food and drinks include the National Trust tea rooms at Stowe, the Buckingham Garden Centre café, the Options coffee shop at the Well Street Centre, and Buckingham Parish Church's Café Ignite.

The Fairtrade Mark guarantees goods meet international Fairtrade standards, which looks at working conditions, local sustainability and the terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.
A Fairtrade Town has made a commitment to supporting fair trade principles and using products with the Fairtrade Mark.
