MORE than 57,000 people flocked to Silverstone last weekend to watch classic racing cars from the last eight decades.

Marking the 60th anniversary of the first Formula One Grand Prix, the three-day Silverstone Classic saw 700 vehicles previously driven some by of the world's greatest drivers racing around the circuit.

Highlights included Graham Hill's 1973 Shadow DN1 Grand Prix car and the Brabham BT8 first driven by Peter Revson during the 1965 American Grand Prix.

Popular F1 presenter Murray Walker was also on hand to sign copies of his new book, and to commentate on the qualifying sessions of the FIA Historic Formula One Championship. With an open paddock, race fans were able to get up close to cars.

Other activities included a flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and a display by the Red Devils Freefall Parachute Team.
Next year's Silverstone Classic is set to take place over the last weekend in July, starting on Friday, July 24.
