STEEPLE Claydon saddled up for a successful Wild West summer fayre last Saturday (12/07).
The event, now in its fifth year, was visited by well over 1,000 people and raised an estimated £5,500 for village amenities.

A colourful fancy-dress procession, accompanied by dancers and a covered wagon float, moseyed through the village to the recreation ground, where Fayre Queen Chloe Brown officially opened the event.

Fayre committee members and helpers had decorated the recreation ground with model teepees, and the pavilion had been transformed into a Last Chance Saloon, serving tea, coffee and other refreshments.

Karl McWhirter, owner of Karl's Bakery in Steeple Claydon, was called on to judge the groups taking part in the fayre procession.

Dancers from the Claydon Academy won first place, followed by the 1st Steeple Claydon Brownies in second, and the Fayre Queen's float in third.

Wild West entertainment at the fayre included a mechanical rodeo bull and an electronic 'saloon shoot-out', which tested visitors' quick-draw skills.

A wide range of other attractions included crafts, karting, a funfair, penny arcade, a dog agility show, bike rides, stalls hosted by local groups, and traditional games.

Fayre committee secretary Trevie Smith said: "When you look over the field and see the village and all the groups coming together, it's absolutely fantastic, and it makes it all worthwhile."

However, Mrs Smith fears this year's summer fayre could be the last unless more local people come forward to join the fayre committee.

Anyone able to help with preparations for next year's Steeple Claydon Fayre can contact Trevie at the village post office on 01296 738942.
