Opera lovers have a treat coming up as Welsh National Opera pay their annual visit to Milton Keynes Theatre, bringing a range of top-quality opera to our doorstep.

This year, the group will be performing three operas in their first themed season, entitled Free Spirits.

From Tuesday to Saturday, March 26 to 30, the company will be alternating Puccini’s Madam Butterfly, Berg’s Lulu and Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen.

Joachim Herz’s classic production of Madam Butterfly, sung in Italian with English surtitles, is described as ‘like a beautiful old photograph’.

From the rapturous love-duet to the devastating One Fine Day, Puccini immerses his audience in Cio-Cio-San’s tragic story.

The Cunning Little Vixen is an uplifting hymn to the cycle of life and nature’s renewal.

Sung in English with English surtitles, David Pountney’s magical production receives its first performances by WNO for over a decade.

Lulu describes the trajectory of a bright female star, from giddy ascent to terrible decline. Berg’s second and final opera is a shattering masterpiece confronting humanity’s darkest regions. Sung in German with surtitles in English.
