HUNDREDS of people lined the streets of Winslow on Monday morning (08/09) as nearly 100 cyclists sprinted through the town during The Tour of Britain road race.
The second stage of the tour started outside Milton Keynes Central Station at 10am. A rolling road closure was in place to protect the riders as they travelled out of MK via Bletchley along the A421.
They then cycled south along the B4033 through Great Horwood, and on to the A413 for a sprint stage at Winslow.
The route then took riders south from Winslow on the Granborough Road, through North Marston and back on to the A413 at Whitchurch, finally crossing the finishing line in Newbury later that day,
In Winslow, a breakaway group of around six riders strained to reach their top speeds for the sprint stage.
Winslow resident Sheila Spatcher was among those watching. She said: "It was very good, a nice atmosphere because a lot of people turned up to see it. It was very exciting to see them coming through."
Maggie Phillips, deputy headteacher at Winslow Combined School, thanked staff and parents for helping to escort 280 children to watch the race. She added: "The children were mesmerised by the speed and by the sheer number of the cyclists. It was a great experience. "
There were three sprint stages in Monday's race, the first four riders across the line getting points and the rider with the most points at the end of the race getting to wear the white, blue and red sprint champion jersey.
The second stage overall winner was Matthew Goss (Team CSC-Saxo Bank) and the stage sprint winner was Danilo Di Luca (LPR Brakes-Ballan).
