Let's do the time warp all over again during musical

Always a sure fire hit with audiences around the world, The Rocky Horror Show positively thrives on audience interaction.

And the rock and roll musical is wending its way back to the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury next week for another shot of Transylvanian pelvic thrusting to the Time Warp.

Writer Richard O’Brien’s classic musical tells the story of newly-engaged Janet and Brad who get lost in the rain.

They stumble upon the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite who is holding an annual convention of visitors from the planet Transsexual.

Bursting at the seams with classic hits, plenty of basques, fishnets and suspenders, be warned... this show has rude parts!

O’Brien, who was born in Cheltenham, and is now in his 70s and lives in New Zealand, explained the show’s enduring appeal.

He said: “The fact it has such light-hearted naughtiness, combined with root fairy tales has a lot to do with its longevity.

“When I wrote it I was a recent father of my first child and out of work. 1972–73 was a moment of change. Glam rock and overt sexuality was around, gay people were coming out and there was a buzz in the air.”

O’Brien believes the fact that people still get excited about the show now and its popularity with a generation of people who weren’t even born when it was written or performed for the first time, is because it makes them laugh.

And his advice to anyone who hasn’t yet seen it is, to do so, “because it swings”.

The show is on at the Waterside at 8pm from Monday, April 18, through to Thursday, 21, and at 5.30pm and 8.30pm on Friday 22 and Saturday 23.

Tickets cost from £14. To book call the box office 0844 871 7607 or visit www.atgtickets.co.uk/aylesbury.
