Remembering Genesis' 1980 performance at Friars Club in Aylesbury

Genesis is one of the biggest bands to regularly perform at the Friars Club in Aylesbury

Before Phil Collins became one of the best known names in the world of music, him, Peter Gabriel, and co regularly belted future hits out in the town.

The band that formed in Surrey have a series of recorded performances at the historic live music venue.

Longtime promoter of the Friars Club, David Stopps, discussed his relationship with the band in an interview with BBC Three Counties five years ago. He said: "The first time I put on Genesis I gave them £10 and then £15, and £25, £50. And then eventually, we paid them £100.

"Peter Gabriel came out and shook my hand on stage, because it was such a big moment for them. They got into three figures. I think I was the first person on earth to pay them £100."

Reports from the event over 40 years ago discuss how 600 people camped out to try and get a hold of a ticket to see Collins and Gabriel in their primes. The gig also saw a bizarre continuation of a ritual between Topps, and the band, he shared a special relationship with.

Topps presented the band with a talent competition cup, in a nod to a 1978 performance, where the band brought a similar award to the promoter.

The set ran for over 90 minutes and is available in full on Youtube with audio only. The band blasted out their biggest 70s hits including: The Carpet Crawlers and Follow You Follow Me.
