While a £134,000 investment to provide better health and fitness facilities in Brackley has been welcomed, the chairman of the district’s leisure trust has said more needs to be done.
This week SERCO, the company which operates Brackley Leisure Centre, started publicising a revamp of the ground floor gym, the addition of a first floor gym, and the acquisition of new equipment.
Brian Taylor, chairman of the South Northants Leisure Trust which provides health and fitness facilities on behalf of South Northants Council said the money from SERCO showed its commitment to improving the town’s health and hopes for greater support from South Northants Council.
Mr Taylor said: “The big problem in Brackley is the swimming pool. We’ve had feasibility study after feasibility study to put a £4.5million pool at the side of the leisure centre.
“The trouble is, how are they going to finance it?”
Mr Taylor said he suspects uncertainty over the future of the relationship between the trust and the council could hamper future investment.
He added: “The other problem, as far as the trust is concerned, is our contract comes up for renewal in 2016 and while we’d love to negotiate that, it looks likely that it will go out to tender, which could see a change of contractor.”
The launch of the new leisure centre facilities will take place on Monday April 8, and a family open day will take place on Saturday, April 20.
There are also prelaunch offers on membership to the gym and swimming pool.
