Ballroom dance pair Andrea Law, from Langford Village, in Bicester, and David Roberts, from Banbury, have been crowned British National Closed Senior Latin Champions.
The couple has been dancing for only five years and competing for four and won the championship by beating off fierce competition at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool.
In a succession of glittering performances they out-danced numerous other qualified couples in several elimination rounds, presenting five Latin routines in cha cha cha, samba, rumba, pasa doble and jive. “Our first teacher Andrzej Mialkowski from Step by Step Dance School taught us for three years and he predicted back in 2009 that we would become British Latin Champions,” said Mr Roberts, who is fitness centre manager at Spiceball Sports Centre, Banbury. “Our current teachers are Richard Still and Morgan Hemphill who recently finished second in the world.
“They were competing in the professional section of the same championships as us last week and they were thrilled with the result. Now they are putting a plan together for our further success!
“We really can’t describe the feeling of being called out as champions with more than 2,000 people erupting into standing ovation and a frenzy of screaming, clapping and cheering.”
The ‘closed’ competition is open only to dancers with British passports.
In spite of their extraordinary success, Mr Roberts and Ms Law will have to miss the world championships in December because they do not have the funds required.
Earlier in the year, the pair came fourth in the UK Open Championships, dancing against the best from countries such as America, Germany, Japan and Finland.
