Buckingham news: Former teenage rebel loves the discipline of poetry

A FORMER teenage tearaway who played truant from school but always loved writing has amazed herself by becoming a published poet.

Buckingham woman Susan Smith, aged 35, is one of only 15 previously unpublished poets to have a poem in print alongside works by famous names such as Carol Ann Duffy, Seamus Heaney Benjamin Zephaniah and Maya Angelou in a volume entitled Soul Feathers, out this month.

As a youngster, Susan was so frequently absent from The Buckingham School that her long-suffering form teacher wrote on her school report: “Like the Scarlet Pimpernel, we seek her here, we seek her there...”
