THE Bucks, Berks and Oxon Wildlife Trust has joined in an attack on the government’s autumn budget statement.
The charity has added its name to an open letter from national bird charity the RSPB asking everyone who cares about the environment to write to their MP to tell them that wildlife and the natural environment don’t need to be sacrificed for growth.
The RSPB fears Chancellor George Osborne’s focus on short-term economic growth could come at the expense of the natural world.
In his autumn statement, the Chancellor referred to the Habitats Regulations, which ensure major developments don’t destroy precious wildlife sites, as a “ridiculous cost on British business”.
The RSPB has said it will fight any attempts to dilute the protection the regulations provide.
The letter says the government’s disregard for the natural environment “goes against everything the government said in June when it launched two major pieces of environmental policy, the Natural Environment White Paper and the England Biodiversity Strategy”.
