A dad-of-three was saddened to see one of the UK’s oldest car garages rundown and vacant – so he bought it.

Towcester Garage, which dates back to 1908, reopens its doors on Septmber 29 after a year in the wilderness.

New owner Steve Fowle, who runs Silverstone Garage and lives in Yardley Gobion, kept driving past the Watling Street East building taking his 12-year-old son Elliot to Sponne School.

But he decided he would ask the landlords if he could restore the historic building to its former glory.

Mr Fowle, who has 30 years of experience in the motor trade, said: “I kept thinking it’s such a shame until one day I thought, you know what, I’m just going to go and see them.

“They were quite happy for the lifeline as it was just getting more and more rundown.

“It was once a brilliant garage.”

Mr Fowle, who also has a 10-year-old son Lewis and daughter Jasmine, six, will continue to run Silverstone Garage but will base himself in Towcester to ‘provide a better service to the people of the town’.

He has spent hundreds on the garage to treat the woodwork and build a reception area with counter and TV ahead of the opening next week.

The garage will carry out MOT tests and repairs to any make or model of car and small vans.
