Self-build plots secured for Bicester projects

People struggling to get a foot on the property ladder in north Oxfordshire are being urged to have a look a new self-build project.

The Build! scheme championed by Cherwell District Council (CDC) now has plots of land available for 250 new homes, as well as some long-term empty houses.

Next year, the plots in Bicester and Banbury will be developed, and CDC is inviting local people to express an interest.

Councillor Debbie Pickford, CDC’s lead member for housing, said: “Years of insufficient investment in building new homes has left many people unable to buy or rent the homes they need to get on in life.

“We therefore need innovative schemes, such as this, to make sure that this generation and the next aren’t denied a stable and affordable home.

“The level of involvement depends on the ambition and the skills that those taking part have.

“There are options to suit everyone from beginners right through to those who want to build a property from scratch.

“So don’t be put off if you are not a DIY expert as training will be provided.”

The Build! scheme lets individuals and groups build, renovate and decorate properties.

In return, they become eligible to buy at a reduced price or rent at a lower market rate.

Houses and flats can be bought on a shared ownership, affordable rent or equity loan option basis.

Informal workshops will be held this month and in October for people wanting more information.

Places at the free workshops can be booked at or via the Build! team on 01295 221615.
