The mayor of Winslow made heads turn as he arrived in a bright yellow Lamborghini for the grand opening of the new Divine Diva fancy dress shop.
Llew Monger got into the spirit of the occasion with an afro wig, false moustache and frilly orange shirt, and joined a host of other colourful characters on Winslow High Street at the launch of the new business.
The Divine Diva Fancy Dress Shop is owned and run by Christina and Jason Hutson.
They have been trading on eBay and Amazon for the past three years, but said demand for a retail presence had become so great in the area that they decided to buck the trend of high street closures.
Christina Hutson said: “We started back in September 2009 as an online-only business. I was a nurse at the time at the John Radcliffe in Oxford, and was looking for something different to do.
“I set this up alongside the nursing, but it grew so big online that I had to give the nursing up in February last year.
“We were sending things out in boxes from our warehouse, so when people wanted to try things on we couldn’t allow it.
“We wanted a small unit, but with rates and rents it was quite difficult.
“But because of the size of the unit, Bucks County Council waived our business rate, which is really good for us to start up.
“We had been looking in Aylesbury. Winslow was the perfect location, and it’s been fantastic so far.”
The online business is still thriving alongside the high street store, with deliveries going as far afield as Australia and the US.
The shop will support Winslow charity Alec’s Angels. For details, contact Divine Diva Fancy Dress on 01296 712728.
