Celestial sounds in village churches

Village churches will once again ring with the sound of music, when Music in Quiet Places returns in May and June.

Seven classical concerts will take place in idyllic settings across Aylesbury Vale, with a village walk prior to each evening event.

The programme has been put together by the artistic director, well-known Buckingham musician Robert Secret.

The first concert of the series takes place at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, in Padbury, on Saturday, May 9.

Robert Secret will conduct members of the Orchestra of Stowe Opera, with soprano Lisa Rijmer, mezzo soprano Sophia Grech and oboe player Christopher Redgate in a programme of arias and duets.

On Saturday, May 16, the Church of All Saints,in Nash plays host to The Metzger Ensemble playing Mozart’s Divertimento in E-flat major, as well as flute quartets by Crusell andViotti.

The village walk will be led by Rev John King.

On Saturday, May 23, there’s rare chance to hear a performance of the romantic String Trio by Wilhelm Berger at the Church of St John the Baptist, in Preston Bissett.

On Saturday, May 30, music lovers have a chance to hear renowned cellist Julian Metzger play a wonderful cello sonata by Boccherini at the Church of St Michael and All Angels, in Waddesdon.

On Saturday, June 6, well­known clarinetist Paul Harris will be playing in the ClarinetQuintet by Robert Fuch at The Church of St James the Great, in Bierton.

The village walk will be led by village historian Honor Lewington.

On Saturday, June 13, you can hear the newly formed ensemble Enigma XIV perform trios byMartinu and Weber and a flute sonata by Bach at The Church of St Mary the Virgin, in Haddenham.

For the final concert, on Saturday, June 20, The Schubert Quintet will be performing at the Church of St Nicholas in Cuddington.
