Choose carefully after spike in A&E demand

COUNTY health bosses are asking patients to choose carefully after an unexpected increase in the number of people attending accident and emergency wards.

Last week 1,903 went to Northampton General Hospital A&E, 343 above the average for this time of year. Emergency admissions did increase by four per cent and East Midlands Ambulance Service experience a 20 per cent increase in 999 calls.

Conversely the Northants Out of Hours service saw a three per cent decrease on the average demand.

A spokesman for NHS Northants said: “Services in the county are experiencing high levels of demand whilst others still have capacity, so NHS Northamptonshire is urging people to choose well and use local services wisely.”

Northants residents who need a doctor out of normal hours should call 03336 664664.
