A SUSPECTED distraction burglar was forced to leave empty-handed on Tuesday thanks to the quick thinking of a Bicester householder.
A 74-year-old woman living in Bernwood Road answered the door to a man at around 6.30pm.
He told her there had been an explosion on the opposite side of the road and asked her to turn the water valves off.
The man asked for a sample of water, but when the householder demanded identification and the man could not produce any she closed the door.
He is described as a stocky white man of average height with a slight Irish accent.
Similar incidents were reported in Botley and Witney the same day.
Anyone with information should contact Witney CID on the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
