Thames Valley Police has launched a force-wide campaign, Operation Nightingale, to identify bodies linked to fatal incidents dating back to the 1970s.

The operation aims to identify eight dead people who remain unidentified, and is being led by the Thames Valley Police Major Crime Review team.

The eight cold cases, from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, are being reopened following a directive from the UK Missing Persons Bureau (www.missingpersons.police.uk).

All police forces across the country are being asked to review outstanding cases.

Police say the cases are likely to be people who have been reported missing.

While the majority may not have been the victim of a crime, officers say identifying who they are is an important step in providing closure for family and friends.

Details of the cases can be viewed online at www.thamesvalley.police.uk/newsevents/newsevents-op.htm.
