The prospect of a new swimming pool for Brackley was discussed as improved health and leisure equipment was unveiled at the town’s leisure centre this week.
On Monday Brian Taylor, chairman of South Northants Leisure Trust unveiled £134,000 worth of new equipment and a refurbishment at Brackley Leisure Centre in Springfield Way.
Mr Taylor said the improvements would lead to more people using the centre and that discussion over the relocation of the Manor Road swimming pool had reemerged.
As he officially opened the new first floor cardiovascular training area, Mr Taylor said: “This place was very poorly used before and we just think this is an amazing change. One of the things has been to make the centre more the centre of the community and get more and more people using it. We consulted pretty widely in then end and think we’ve got the best we possibly could.”
Mr Taylor said 21 new Tomahawk Spinning Bikes have been installed on the second floor of the gym, with more space for Spinning classes.
The upstairs gym also incorporates a new circuit zone with an array of new equipment including three cross trainers.
Changes on the ground floor gym have seen the introduction of a new strength and functional zone, equipped with free weights up to 44kg, cable machines, new benches and hammer strength racks.
However Mr Taylor said there were more improvements to be made to the town’s health and fitness facilities.
He added: “The thing that’s very much in discussion at the moment, although it’s early days, is the swimming pool, which hopefully will eventually will go alongside this building and be integrated into this building. It’s some way off, but that’s being actively talked about now.
“It’s just a question of funding and everything else, but we are at the stage where we have plans and we are talking about it. It depends which option we go for, but realistically it will be somewhere over £4million.”
Brackley Mayor Chris Cartmell was also at the unveiling and added: “ I am sure the people of Brackley will greatly appreciate it.”
A Family Open Day to showcase the new facilities, with games and entertainment, will take place on Saturday, April 20.
