The former chairman of high-flying football club Leicester City has been awarded an MBE in the new year’s honours list.
Dr Philip Smith, who has lived in Padbury for 28 years, will accept the prize for services to business and the community at a ceremony in 2016.
At 69 years old, Dr Smith has enjoyed an illustrious and successful career which has spanned across the fields of business, education, sport and charity in and around north Bucks and Milton Keynes.
Dr Smith, who sits on the University of Buckingham medical school’s development board and offers his wealth of expertise to students of the business school, said: “I am humbled that my efforts have been rewarded in this way. I try to put what I can into the roles I perform in MK, but this is something special.”
A member of the Rotary club, Dr Smith acknowledged that the award was a testament to the organisations he has been connected with throughout his career.
He added: “I feel incredibly proud, especially for my family and for the people of Milton Keynes.
“It’s nice to see them get some recognition.”
The new year’s honours list was officially announced on December 31, honouring the Padbury resident alongside the likes of broadcaster Sue Barker, actor Idris Elba and singer Damon Albarn.
Although unsure of when he will be invited to collect his award, Dr Smith intends to celebrate privately with his family over the festive period.
The recognition of his achievements will not slow Dr Smith down too much, as he remains heavily involved with organisations.
He said: “Busy people always find extra things to do. I will continue to do things that are important to me.”
An avid football fan, Dr Smith was the chairman of Padbury United for 20 years before taking the helm at Stony Stratford FC.
He also served as chairman of currently high flying Leicester City FC in the 90s, presiding over boardroom drama which received national attention.
Dr Smith is the chairman of MK Business Leaders Partnership, MK Business Council, MK Transport Partnership and MK Sports Board, as well as chairing the board of governors of Milton Keynes Academy.
In addition, Dr Smith is a director of Destination MK, The Stables, Bucks and MK Sports Partnership and Biztech.
He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration by De Montfort University in 2010, where he remains as trustee of the De Montfort University Students Union Trust. He is also a Governor at the University of Bedfordshire.
Originally trained as an accountant, Dr Smith has been a senior executive at a host of national companies, including ASDA and energy supplier National Power.
