THE public face of the Old Gaol has retired, after 15 years in charge of the building, museum, shops and Tourist Information Centre.
On Tuesday, John Roberts took his last bow at a farewell reception, hosted by the outgoing Chairman of the Friends of the Old Gaol, Jean Summers.
Accepting an limited edition engraved glass, the Old Gaol Trust’s Manager spoke of the dramatic steps taken since he joined and how so many people had made so much difference.
“It’s an old building, dead at night, but it comes to life through people – especially children,” he said.
Founder-Chairman Clive Birch MBE led the tributes, saying: “He was the manager who helped fund the building through the shop, developed the Information Centre through good service and monitored the Museum. When he joined, there was no office, filing, or system, the heating was ‘dire’ and the ‘loo was always on the blink’.”
