A 600 metre evacuation zone has been set up around the site of a gas leak in Brackley.

At 9.42am this morning, Thursday, Northamptonshire Police were called to an incident at Brackley.

An incident has occurred damaging a gas main and causing gas to escape. No one was injured in the incident.

The gas leak was not caused by an overturned lorry hitting a gas mains as previously reported by the police.

As a result of a significant gas escape, a 600 metre evacuation zone is being imposed.

Police are working with partners including the Fire and Rescue Service, Northamptonshire County Council and Transco to ensure public safety.

The incident has resulted road closures and diversions and significant local disruption.

The public are asked to comply with requests from the police and emergency services.

It is not known at this time if the evacuation zone will be extended or how long before members of the public will be able to return to the area.

The polling station at the Town Hall is just outside the evacuation area, but voters are advised to allow extra time for their journey as voting must cease at 10pm.
