Get ready to have a quacking time, when the annual University of Buckingham duck race opens to the public for the first time.

Plastic ducks are on sale for £1 each at the university bookshop at the Hunter Street campus for the annual charity fun event, which has been running for more than a decade.

This year’s duck race takes place on Wednesday, August 20, from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.

Proceeds will be shared between Buckingham Hospital and the University of Buckingham Supporting Overseas Schooling (UBSOS).

There will be prizes for the best-dressed duck in both adults and children categories as well as a prize for the winner of the race itself.

Ducks will set off from the end of the mill race, next to the weir on the island car park, and float 100 metres downstream to Old Tanlaw Mill.

About 200 plastic ducks will take part and there will also be a barbecue, ice cream, and specially made alcoholic ‘Fluffy Duck’ cocktails.

The University of Buckingham Musical Society will play songs from its forthcoming production of Grease at Stowe later in August.

There will be stalls laid on by business enterprise students, who have started businesses selling a variety of products.

Organiser Jane Russell, who is the university’s web content manager, said: “We are delighted to be able to welcome townsfolk for the first time. It’s a great opportunity to mingle with students and staff.

“It’s become a popular annual event at the university.

“It’s always a wonderful day and students and children love decorating their ducks and willing them to cross the finish line first.

“This will also be the first chance for everyone to have a sneak preview of some songs from Grease, which the students have been rehearsing for months.”
