A multi-million pound upgrade for the Swan Pool in Buckingham has received a £500,000 grant from Sport England.

Aylesbury Vale District Council successfully applied for the grant to help modernise the 18-year-old facility.

The funding boost comes a few weeks after AVDC’s cabinet gave the go-ahead to proceed with the improvements.

The scheme includes a remodelled entrance area with a two-storey climbing wall, an extended fitness suite, an enlarged crèche/multi-use room and an improved refreshment area. There are also plans to extend and refit the wet and dry changing areas.

The prospective plans will be on display at the centre over the coming weeks and users of the facility will be invited to submit their comments.

Building work is expected to start on site this summer and be completed by summer 2015, subject to the council agreeing capital investment in the project. Work will be phased to keep as many facilities open for use throughout the improvement programme.

Howard Mordue, councillor for leisure and member for Buckingham South, said: “We are very pleased to receive this lottery funding to transform the facilities at the Swan Pool and Leisure Centre. The facility is well used by the local community and this money will help make a real difference. We hope the improvements will attract even more visitors to the centre.”

Sports and Leisure Management (SLM) Ltd, operating under its brand name, Everyone Active, assumed responsibility for the operation of the Swan Pool in April 2013. The leisure operator will work alongside AVDC, which owns the centre, on the project.

Everyone Active contract manager Christine Coppack said: “We’re thrilled that Aylesbury Vale District Council has been awarded lottery funding to help modernise the centre and improve the quality of leisure facilities for the local community. These important works will provide a fresher, more pleasant environment for local residents of all ages to enjoy and be active in.”

The Swan Pool and Leisure Centre is one of 23 projects across England to share in £7.3 million of lottery investment from the latest round of funding.

Sport England property director, Charles Johnston, said: “We know people have a better experience of sport when they have good facilities in which to play. This investment will ensure the people of Buckingham will be able to develop a sporting habit for life in a first-class sports facility.”
