HEALTH: Almost 500 babies were born in Oxfordshire to mothers who smoked during pregnancy throughout the first three quarters of the 2011/12 financial year.

According to figures released by the Department for Health, 6,133 babies were born at Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust hospitals between April 1 and December 2011. Of those, 493 infants were born to mothers who were still smoking at the time of delivery, equating to an average of about eight per cent of all births in the county.
