FOOTBALL: Mursley United retained top spot at the head of South Midlands Divison 2 with a 2-1 home win over Hale Leys United.

With Alex Collard ruled out, skipper Steve Mooney slotted back into central defence and Ricky Foster returned with Rick Keane dropping to the bench.

Mursley remained calm as their visitors looked to close them down all over the pitch and they found it hard to break down a resilient opposition .

Five minutes before the break, Mohammed hooked a speculative ball into the penalty area from the right wing, which caught the wind and looped over Adam Garratt and into the net. This galvanised the hosts into the best move of the match, as slick passing set Ed Mills away down the right. He beat his full back and whipped in a low cross which was met well, at the near post, by Paul Hollingsworth, whose effort crashed off the underside of the bar and into the net to bring the score level at the interval.

Ten minutes into the second half, it was Mooney, meeting the ball with a solid head from a corner who secured all three points for the home team.

They were able to close the match out with a disciplined display with Jack Westbrook again showing maturity beyond his years, impressing with his composure in central defence.
