THE landlocked Olympic sailing doctor from Silverstone has received his OBE from Prince Charles at Buckinghm Palace.
Dr Frank Newton, who founded the Silverstone village surgery in 1965 was awarded an OBE for services to sailing in last New Year’s honours.
He has also served as team doctor to the Olympic sailing team and for cross country runners,
Dr Newton said: “When you get the OBE, you start to wonder who it is actually from. Some people involved in athletics rang me up when they heard the announcement and told me well done but they had unsuccessfully nominated me a few years ago too.
He added: “It really does feel real to me now I’ve been to the palace. The really lovely thing is they make it feel like the ceremony is all about you. Prince Charles was incredibly well briefed and he made it really special.”
Dr Newton, who has also served Silverstone Circuit for 45 years, was the UK Olympic sailing team’s doctor in 1975 and 1976 and started an sport injury clinic at Northampton General Hospital.
